Start bid, reserve, quantity and the rest
The optional fields under "How it sells", which of them are private to the house, and the rules each one follows.
Under How it sells on the lot screen there are six fields. None is required. Together they are what your bidding platform asks for beyond the catalogue line.
- Start bid. Where bidding opens, in the sale's currency. It can be at most the low estimate; Lotdesk refuses a start bid above it.
- Reserve. The price the consignor has agreed as the lowest the lot may sell for. It is the house's own: it is never printed in the catalogue, never shown on the sample sale and never put in a public file. Only people signed in to the house see it.
- Quantity. 1 for a single piece; more for a box lot. A whole number from 1 up.
- Category. Chosen from the house's own list. See The house's categories.
- Dimensions. Free text, such as "120 x 60 x 45 cm", up to 120 characters.
- Where it is. The shelf, bay or pallet the piece is on, up to 80 characters. It is internal: it helps your porters find the piece and it is never printed.
Money fields follow the rules of Estimates: plain figures to the penny, in the currency of the sale.
On a lot's own screen these appear together under the record as a short list, with the reserve and the location marked as the house's own. They can be changed afterwards under Correct the record.
If you are going to move the sale into another system, fill in the ones that system asks for while you are standing at the piece; it is quicker than coming back to each lot at the desk.
