Writing a lot at the piece
Every field on the lot screen, what it is for, and which ones the catalogue cannot do without.
Open the sale and choose Write a lot. The screen is laid out in the order you handle the piece.
- What it is. The one line the catalogue prints, such as "George III mahogany chest of drawers". It is the only field a lot cannot be saved without, and it holds up to 200 characters.
- The description. What you would write on the sheet: the wood, the marks, what is with it. Up to 2,000 characters.
- Condition. The chip, the replaced handle, the wear to the seat. Up to 800 characters. See Condition notes and grades.
- Grade, section and consignor. Pick them from the lists. A section or consignor has to exist first; add it on the sale or at consignment intake and it appears in the list.
- Captured. Leave it blank and the phone's clock is used. It records when you stood at the piece, not when the lot reached the book.
- Sublot of an existing lot. Leave it empty and the lot takes the next number. See Sublots like 27A.
- The estimate. A low and a high figure in the sale's currency. See Estimates.
- How it sells. Start bid, reserve, quantity, category, dimensions and where the piece is in the building. All are optional. See Start bid, reserve, quantity and the rest.
- The photographs. Take them with the phone's camera or choose them. See Photographs.
Press Save the lot. The lot is written to the phone first; if the signal is good it goes straight away, and if not it waits in the outbox. Either way you are free to move to the next piece. The lot is given its number when it reaches the book; see How lot numbers work.
