The house's categories
How a lot is filed under a category, how to keep the house's own list, and what happens when a category is in use.
A category is how a lot is filed for the bidding platform: furniture, silver and plate, ceramics and glass. It is separate from a section, which is the room the lot sits in for the printed catalogue. A section belongs to one sale; the categories belong to the house and carry from sale to sale.
Every house starts with a list of common categories: furniture; silver and plate; ceramics and glass; pictures and prints; clocks and watches; jewellery; books and maps; textiles and rugs; collectables; tools, garden and architectural. To keep your own list, open the lot screen and follow Edit the house's categories.
- Add one by typing its name, up to 60 characters. Once you add your own, the list becomes yours and the starting ones are kept in it.
- Remove one with its Remove link. A category that still has lots filed under it cannot be removed; Lotdesk says how many, and you move those lots first from their Correct the record.
- A house holds up to 200 categories.
A lot written on a phone can only use a category that is on the list. If it names one that is not, it is turned down with "not one of this house's categories — add it to the house's category list first".
Adding and removing categories needs a writable book; see The plan. Choosing a category for a lot is done from How it sells.
