Trying the sample sale first
A house with lots already written in it, open to anyone, with a login you can use to write a lot yourself.
Before you pay for anything you can walk through a real book. The sample sale belongs to a made-up auction house and is open to everyone: sections, consignors and their terms, lots with photographs, condition notes and estimates, the printed catalogue and the CSV.
Things worth doing in the first ten minutes:
- Open one lot and read it the way a cataloguer would write it: the title the catalogue prints, the description, the condition note and grade, and the estimate in its bracket.
- Open the catalogue. It is an ordinary page; your browser's print dialog turns it into the sheet you would hand to the printer.
- Download the CSV and open it in a spreadsheet. These are the columns your own sale would come out in.
- Sign in as the sample house. The page prints the email address and password to use. Write a lot, switch your phone to flight mode first if you like, and watch it wait in the outbox at the bottom of the screen and go when the signal returns.
The sample house is shared, so anything you write there is seen by the next visitor. Do not put a real consignor's details into it. When you are ready to catalogue your own sale, open a book of your own.
